Quick verdict

Plausible is the analytics tool we recommend when you want to know how your website is doing without learning a reporting language first. It answers the everyday questions — how many people visited, where they came from, which pages they read, and whether they did the thing you wanted — on a single page you can understand in a minute.

It’s also built around privacy. Plausible doesn’t use cookies and doesn’t collect personal data, and the company is based in the EU. For many sites that means less consent-banner friction and less legal worry, though you should still confirm what your own jurisdiction requires.

The trade-off is depth. Plausible deliberately leaves out user-level tracking, complex segmentation and the long tail of reports that big analytics suites offer. If your marketing team builds detailed attribution models, it won’t be enough on its own. For blogs, small businesses, SaaS marketing sites and agencies, it usually is.

Bottom line

Start on Growth — it covers most small sites. Move to Business only when you need its extra reporting features or more team access. If you have a developer and a server, the free self-hosted edition is worth a look.

Pros & cons

What we liked

  • One-page dashboard anyone on the team can read
  • Cookie-free and built without personal data collection
  • Lightweight script that barely touches page speed
  • Open source, with a self-hosted option
  • Goals and custom events cover most conversion tracking
  • Shareable public or private dashboard links for clients

What we didn’t

  • No free hosted plan, only a trial
  • Far fewer reports than a full analytics suite
  • No user-level journeys or individual visitor profiles
  • Pricing rises with traffic, so busy sites pay more
  • Advanced features sit on the higher plan

Pricing & plans

Plausible prices by monthly pageviews rather than by seats, so the bill tracks your traffic, not your team size. There’s no free hosted plan, but there is a free trial, and yearly billing is cheaper than paying monthly. See the current plans below.

Feature checklist

Ease of use

Setup is a single script tag in your site’s header, or a plugin for common platforms like WordPress. Once data starts coming in, everything lives on one dashboard: visitors, pageviews, bounce rate, visit duration, top pages, sources, countries and devices.

Filtering is the clever part. Click any source, page or country and the whole dashboard narrows to it, so “what did people from this newsletter read?” takes one click instead of a custom report. That’s the reason non-technical teammates actually use it.

  • Goals and custom events track sign-ups, downloads, outbound clicks and form submissions.
  • UTM tags show up automatically, so campaign reporting needs no extra setup.
  • Email reports send a regular summary to people who never log in.
  • Shared dashboards let clients or the public view stats without an account.

Privacy and compliance

Plausible’s whole design starts from collecting less. It counts visits without cookies or persistent identifiers, and it doesn’t build profiles of individual visitors. Data is hosted in the EU on the managed service.

Because of that, many site owners run it without a cookie banner. That’s a real usability win, but it isn’t legal advice: rules differ by country and by what else your site does. If you also run ad pixels or chat widgets, you may need a banner anyway. Check with whoever handles compliance for your business.

What it leaves out

Plausible’s simplicity is a choice, and it helps to know where the edges are before you switch. There are no individual visitor profiles, so you can’t follow one person across sessions. Segmentation is limited to the filters on the dashboard, and there’s no built-in link to ad platforms for bidding or audience building.

For most small sites, none of that is missed — those reports tend to go unread anyway. But if someone on your team runs paid campaigns and depends on detailed attribution, talk to them first. Some teams keep a second tool for that one job and use Plausible for everything else.

Integrations

Plausible keeps its integration list short and practical. The Google Search Console connection is the useful one for content sites, because it brings search keywords into the same dashboard. You can also import historical Google Analytics data so you don’t start from zero, and pull numbers into other tools through the stats API.

Who Plausible is for

Choose Plausible if you…

  • want traffic numbers anyone can read
  • care about visitor privacy and lighter consent banners
  • run a blog, small business or SaaS marketing site
  • report stats to clients and want shareable dashboards

Look elsewhere if you…

  • need user-level journeys or detailed cohorts
  • run complex ad attribution across many channels

  • need product analytics inside a web app

A common setup is Plausible for the marketing site plus a dedicated product analytics tool inside the app. Each does its own job, and the marketing team gets a dashboard it can actually use.

Frequently asked questions

Is Plausible free?

The hosted service isn’t free, but it has a free trial. Plausible is open source, so you can self-host the community edition at no licence cost if you’re comfortable running your own server.

Can Plausible replace Google Analytics?

For most small sites, yes — it covers traffic, sources, top pages and conversions. If you rely on detailed audiences, user-level reports or deep ad integrations, you’ll miss them.

Do I need a cookie banner with Plausible?

Plausible itself doesn’t use cookies, so many sites don’t need a banner for it. Other scripts on your site may still require one, so check your full setup and local rules.

Does Plausible have a lifetime deal?
